A Ride to the Poisoning

You're first goal is to get to that poisoning. Go down to the garage and talk to Glottis. Ask him to be your driver. He'll tell you he can't because he's too big. Tell him something to make him feel better - tell him that he's not too big, but the cars are too small. He'll agree to be your driver and give you a work order he needs signed before he can modify your vehicle.

If you take the work order up to Eva, you'll learn that the boss isn't in any mood to be bothered. You'll need to find another way.

Leave the DOD and head down the alley. There you'll find a lengthy rope made of ties. Climb the rope up to the ledge. The first window to your right is Don's. He's not in (so that's what that rope was for… ). Open the window and climb in. Look at his computer. Set the auto response so that it tells Eva to sign the form. Go back to Eva and ask her to get the work order signed. She'll sign it, and you'll be off to the poisoning.

Once in the Land of the Living, take out your scythe and cut open the wriggling sack on the ground to release Bruno.

Getting a Good Lead

It should be clear to you at this point that a good soul isn't going to just drop into Manny's lap. You must steal one. But it won't be easy. Perhaps the mail server on the ground floor could be useful? Unfortunately, it's locked. But you must find a way in.

Head out on the street and talk to the balloon wrangler. When he gives you a choice of balloons, ask for a dead worm. Then ask for another one. Next stop is the packing room, where you secured Bruno for his voyage to the ninth underworld. Fill one of the balloons with the red nozzle and the other with the blue nozzle. Go back up to your office and put the balloons, one at a time, into the interoffice mail receptacle. Now head back down to the mail server.

The handyman will be there working on it, and he won't let Manny in. While the door is open, turn the lock. This will stop it from closing all the way when the handyman is done.

Go back to your office and take the deck of cards from the table. Remove a card from the deck. Take the card to Eva's desk and use her hole punch on it. Go back to the mail server (take the fire extinguisher if you haven't already) and open the door. Use the ventilated card in the mail tube to block the incoming message. Now, Manny will head off to reap Mercedes Colomar.

El Marrow (cont.)

Escaping from the Shack

Don Copal has locked you in Glottis' shack. Look out the window, and a mysterious voice will begin talking to you. Tell the stranger you want to expose the corruption in the DOD, and he'll let you out.

Getting the Eggs

In the headquarters of the Lost Souls Alliance, Salvador Limones will enlist you to help him find some carrier pigeon eggs, so he can breed messengers.

Take the elevator up to the alley and go talk to the balloon wrangler again. Ask him for anything except a dead worm. Any of his balloon animals will suffice. While there, take some bread from the stand next door. Go back to the alley and climb the tie rope. Walk around the ledge to Dom's office, open the window, and crawl in. Open his desk drawer and take the coral statue. Crawl back out and walk back to the rope. Pick up the loose end and tie it to the coral statue. Now throw the makeshift grappling hook to the ladder and climb up to the roof.

You must scare the pigeons away if you want to get their eggs. Walk to the metal dish on the roof and place the balloon inside. Now, crumble the bread into the dish. When the pigeons come to eat, the balloon will pop, and they'll fly away. Take the eggs and return to the LSA headquarters.

A Good Set of Teeth

Salvador still won't let you leave, as he needs your teeth to help him access the computer records. You must give him a good representation if you're going to convince him to let you go.

Climb back up the rope and enter Dom's office. Go over to the punching bag and give it a few taps until Dom's mouthpiece falls to the floor. Take it and go to Glottis' shack. Use the mouthpiece on the bondo machine, then bite the mouthpiece. Take the teeth imprints to Salvador, and he'll lead you through the passage to the petrified forest.

The Petrified Forest

Glottis' Heart

Before you can go anywhere, you must help Glottis, who - in an overzealously dramatic act - has tossed his heart somewhere in the forest.

Nearby, you'll find Glottis' heart stuck in a giant creatures' web. Using your scythe to cut it out won't work - but you do need your scythe. Pick up one of the bones from the pile and throw it in the web (you may as well pick up four or so more - they'll come in handy later). Now, use your scythe with the bone to send the heart careening back to Glottis. After you give him the heart, he'll jump back on the Bone Machine, and you two can explore the rest of the forest.

There are three sections to the forest - the tree maze, the marrow sapper, and the demon beavers. Let's start with the maze.

The Tree Maze

This is a confusing series of passages in which each one comes out another, seemingly random passage. If only you had something that would tell you which way to go…

In the main area of the forest, near where Glottis was crying, there is a sign with arrows on it. Pick it up and carry it into the maze. Put the sign down anywhere. It will turn and point to a passage. Unfortunately, going through that passage doesn't seem to work. Pick up the sign again and take it somewhere else. It should point in a new direction. Keep moving the sign until you pinpoint where it is attracted to - it's not pointing to a passage, but a point in the clearing. Put the sign down at this point, and a passage will open.

Through this passage is a sign with a key attached. Read the sign and take the key.

The Marrow Sapper

Glottis can't drive through the center passage of the forest, but he tells you the pistons on this contraption will make a good suspension augmentation for the Bone Machine. Unfortunately, his method of getting them doesn't seem to be working.

The pistons get their power from the hoses on the ground. Take the wheelbarrow and move it forward. As you pass over each of the four hoses, one of the pistons will stop. You must make it so that the pistons on the right are moving together, alternating with the pistons on the left, which must also be moving together. Once you have made the pistons move in this pattern, the sapper will start rocking. Turn it off so that Glottis will climb up. Once he's at the top, turn it on. He'll get a little bruised, but you'll get the pistons.

The Demon Beavers

The demon beavers are frightening creatures and would be happy to make you a part of their dam. Fortunately, you have just the weapon to use against these flaming beasts - the fire extinguisher. But how do you get them all, since one is always hiding in the trees waiting to rekindle his friends?

You'll need at least four bones, which you can get from either the dam itself or the pile near the web where you found Glottis' heart. Follow the path to the left that ends next to the dam. Throw a bone into the tar, then get out the extinguisher and wait. When a beaver jumps in to get it, spray it. Repeat this until all the beavers are gone.

Now unlock the gate with the key from the tree maze, and you're off to Rubacava.

Rubacava

Earning Your Keep

You first goal in Rubacava is to find a way to earn a living until Meche shows up. In the café at the top of the stairs, you'll find Celso - an old client. Talk to Celso until he tells you he is waiting for his wife and gives you her photo.

Go back down to the foggy area just below the café. Walk right into the fog. You'll fall of a cliff and be rescued by Velasquez. Go down to where Velasquez and Glottis are chatting near the Bone Machine. Show the photo of Celso's wife to Velasquez. He'll tell you she's gone and give you his boarding records to prove it.

Take the boarding record to Celso and show him. He'll take off after her, leaving you to man the mop.

One Year Later

One year has passed since Celso handed Manny the mop, and now Manny has transformed the café into a moderately successful casino. But he's still just waiting for Meche. Perhaps that's who's waiting for him downstairs.

Enter the casino, go down the stairs, and exit. Walk over to the telescope, where Meche is standing. Talk to her.

Booking Passage

Once the real Meche is gone, talk to Velasquez. He'll tell you that you must do three things to get a job on the Limbo: become a member of the Union, get rid of seaman Naranja, and get some tools for Glottis.

The first will be the easiest, as there is someone at your casino who will prove very useful.

Paying Your Union Dues

Go back to Calavera's and go down to the roulette room. Sit in the booth and talk to Chowchilla Charlie until he gives you the betting stub printer. Ask him about making you a Union card. He'll give you a pass to the High Roller's Lounge and tell you he'll forge a Union card for you if you recover a suitcase that Max has taken from him and hidden in his wine cellar. Before leaving, show Glottis your pass to the High Roller's Lounge.

Go to Max's, located on the far side of town. Down the hall from the track, you'll find a large litter box and near it, some huge cans of cat food. On top of the cans is a can opener. Take it. Head up into the High Roller's Lounge. Glottis should be up there, raising a ruckus. Go into the kitchen and wait for the waiter to enter the pantry. Close the doors behind him and secure them with your scythe. Now, empty the keg of wine, climb up the ladder, and use the can opener on the top of the keg. Climb in.

You'll emerge in the wine cellar. Climb onto the forklift and drive it into the freight elevator. Get off and push the button. Watch the passing wall, and you'll see a hallway pass by. Push the button and return to the cellar level. Push the button to go back up and quickly climb on the forklift. Drive the forks under the gap in the gate. They will catch on the hallway and stop the elevator. Now, get off the forklift and raise the forks.

Head down the hallway and grab the suitcase. Charlie will appear and give you the union card.

Rubacava (cont.)

Seaman Naranja

Getting Naranja's job will require a few steps. First, you must deal with him specifically.

Head to the Blue Casket, the beatnik club located below your casino. Go into the kitchen and watch the waiter work. Fill the turkey baster (from the kitchen at the High Roller's Lounge) with the concoction in the sink. Now go to the scrimshaw parlor, where Naranja is getting some ink.

You must put Naranja through a little bit of pain before he'll take a huge swig of the liquid pain killer he's nursing. Open the refrigerator and open the drawer within. Now, walk over and fill Naranja's bottle with the turkey baster. He'll go out like a light. Search his body and take the identification tags.

You'll need one more thing before Naranja will be considered missing in action. Go visit Carla at the boarding gates to Max's zeppelin. You must get her to strip search you, but all the metal on you is too visible. Unless, of course, you drink some of the gold-flake liqueur from the bar at Calavera's. Drink the booze and step into the metal detector. Once you're in the back room with Carla, ask her for her portable metal detector. She'll throw it out the window into the littler box.

Go down to the litter box and step out on the metal overhang. Use your scythe on the litter to retrieve the metal detector. Now head to the morgue. Give the metal detector to Membrillo, then place Naranja's identification tags on one of the bodies. When he's reported as sprouted, you'll get the job.

The Tools

To get the tools, you must help the Sea Bees get organized. Visit the Sea Bees and talk to Terry. He has the right ideas to help them overcome their tyrannical bosses, he just doesn't seem to have the right words. Perhaps those revolutionaries at the Blue Casket could help.

Unfortunately, these guys want little to do with Manny. They think he's just a suit. Little do they know, he's working for the LSA. They'd be pretty impressed if they knew he knew Salvador Limones, so show them Salvador's letters (you can find them in the casino). They'll give you their book. Take the book to Terry, and he'll organize a strike... and end up in jail. If you want the tools, you must spring him.

Rubacava (cont.)

Finding the Photo and Springing Terry

There's only one lawyer in town who can help Terry, and that's Nick. Unfortunately, he's under exclusive retainer to Max, and no amount of money is going to get him to help. But you may just have some information that could make him sympathetic to your cause - information about him and Max's girlfriend, Olivia. Lola took some pictures of Nick in a compromising position, but first you must find her.

Go talk to Lupe, the coat checker at your casino. She'll give you an envelope from Lola, but the key that was inside is missing. Make sure to ask her about her new filing system as well. It'll come in handy later. Only one person could have taken that key, so go visit Nick in the High Roller's Lounge. Talk to him until he leaves, then take his cigarette case.

You can't open it. Take it to Carla at the zeppelin boarding gate. Tell her you found it under her desk. She'll put it in the detonation tank and hand you the key. There's only one place in Rubacava that's closed off to you. If you don't know where it is, look through the telescope where you thought you saw Meche earlier.

Take the key to the lighthouse and go in. Talk to Lola and take the card. It says "22 Lengua." Take the card to Lupe and give it to her. She will give you Lola's coat. Inside is a scrap of paper that says "#36 The Rusty Anchor." Where would you find a list of things that includes a rusty anchor?

Take the scrap of paper to Toto, the scrimshaw artist. Give it to him, and he'll give you a photo in exchange. It's of a cat race. The real photo is filed away in the race office, and you're going to have to get it somehow. Now that betting stub printer should come in handy. You'll need three pieces of information to get the correct photo - the week the race took place, the day, and the race number.

Look at the photo, which should tell you the race number: 6. The week is a little trickier. There's a zeppelin in the photo, and you should know at this point that the original Olivia crashed on her maiden voyage. Go to the Sanspoof memorial and read the plaque. Sanspoof was killed by the Olivia in the second week of racing. But what day? Look at the photo again. What are the people wearing? Kitty hats! And everyone knows, Tuesday is kitty hat day. Using the printer to print a stub for the sixth race on Tuesday of the second week. Take the stub to the race office and get your photo. Now just show the photo to Nick, and he'll free Terry. Now, all you must do is free Glottis.

Glottis, Let's Go

If you've talked to Max, you know that the only way Glottis' credit will run out is if your casino goes out of business. Return to the casino and go to the roulette room. Chief Bogen will be there, hoping his lucky streak has returned. Head upstairs and open the secret panel on your desk. Bogen is betting number two, and the magnet on the wheel is set there, making sure he wins. Simply change the winning number, and Bogen will shut you down.

The Limbo

Escaping from Puerto Zapato

Another year has passed. The Limbo has arrived in Puerto Zapato, but something has gone wrong. Most of the crew has been sprouted and assassins are boarding, disguised as customs agents, to rub out Glottis and Manny. Locked in the engine room, our heroes don't have much time.

Your basic goal here is to avoid being blown to smithereens by the bomb the assassins have planted outside the door. You must resort to some drastic means. Go over to the window on the right and raise the anchor. Use the right engine to move the ship left. Drop the right anchor again, and the anchors will hook together on the ocean floor. Walk over and raise the left anchor. This should bring them both up to eye level. Use your scythe to hook the anchor to the porthole. Now, walk over and raise the right anchor again. Put the ship in reverse.

The Ocean Floor

Your movement is pretty limited here, as you can't leave the lighted area. Eventually, Chepito will stroll by. Talk to Chepito and follow him if you want, but it won't get you anywhere. You need that light. After talking to Chepito, he'll go stand near Glottis for a few moments. Take that opportunity to grab the light. While struggling with Chepito, pull him over to Glottis. Now, you can go investigate the mysterious glow in the distance.

Turns out the Pearl wasn't just a myth. But that big creature isn't going to let you near it - especially not with that bright light calling attention to you. Lead Glottis and Chepito around the ledge of the ravine. At the far right, you'll find a rock covered with barnacles. Lead Chepito around the rock, and the barnacles will attach themselves to his already-inhabited eyebrows. This will distract the beast while you and Glottis make your way down to the sub.

The Edge of the World

Helping Meche

Go to the reception area for Dom's office and talk to Meche. She'll ask you for a gun. You don't have one. While Meche smokes, pivot the ashtray. She'll burn her stockings and throw them away. Take them out of the trash can. Return to your office and talk to the kids in the cage. Tell them you want to help, but can't because you don't have any tools. Pugsy will throw a tiny hammer at your head. Pick up the hammer and go to the elevator.

Take the elevator down and go to the left. Find Chepito and talk to him about bartering for booty. Give him the stockings in exchange for a gun and trade him the tiny hammer for the Bust-All. Return up the elevator and give Meche the gun.

Freeing Meche

Meche is locked in Dom's vault, which is located in the hallway between the offices. Use the Bust-All on the hinges and then look at the exposed tumblers. Turn the wheel so that the flat end of each tumbler is facing to the right, then put your scythe in the gap. Turn the handle to open the vault.

When inside the vault, close the door. Open your scythe and touch the electrical circuit above the door. This will open the secret door. Pick up the battle axe and drag it into the room where Meche is standing. Look at the suitcases to get another lead on Hector LeMans' plans. There's a vent at the top of the room. Maybe if you turn on the faucet, you and Meche can float to the top. Use the scythe on the water nozzle hanging from the ceiling and then turn the faucet on. Hmm... not enough water. Turn the faucet again to drain the room. That should give you an idea. Drag the battle axe and drop it on the tile where the water drained.

Procuring a Boat

You must find Glottis. Find the underwater conveyer belt. It can be accessed either from the left crane stop or by going right from the bottom of the elevator to your office. Flip the switch on the conveyor so that it is heading into the water. Climb on the conveyor and follow it to the anchor. Climb down the anchor to find Glottis. Climb back up and get in the crane. Move it to the right side of the island, then lower the crane. Get out and go down to the beach. Use the Bust-All on the crane to detach the chain.

Get back in the crane and move it to the left side of the island. Lower the chain onto the conveyor. Climb down and flip the switch on the conveyor so that the chain bunches up. Flip it again to hook the anchor. Get back in the crane and raise the chain.

Now you must do something to bust through the coral. Those rotating coral crushers should work. Get in the crane and lower the chain into the crushers. Now raise it again. You're on your way.

Dealing with Dom

Fighting Dom with your scythe isn't going to work. Remember the advice you gave Glottis when he asked you what to do if the squid came back? Gouge the squid in the eye with your scythe.

The Ninth Underworld and Rubacava Revisited

Goodbye to Bruno and Chepito

Walk down the steps to the base of the gate and open the sarcophagus to free Bruno. He'll give you the mug you sent him off with. Now go back up and go through the gates. Talk to Chepito, then go out and talk to the gatekeeper. He'll give you a note from LeMans himself.

Reviving Glottis

Walk down the steps and enter the demons' workshop. Glottis has passed out from not driving for so long. Go into the kitchen and open the drawer. Take a rag and dip it in the oil drum back in the workshop. Put your mug on the cup rack, then put the oily rag in the toaster. The fire will bring the demons running, and the cup's propulsive power will inspire them to build you a vehicle.

The Booby-Trapped Bone Machine

You'll be waylaid on your way back to El Marrow, but luckily you'll wind up in Rubacava, where the Bone Machine is still in storage. Unfortunately, it's been booby-trapped by Domino.

Go to the dock and talk to Velasquez. When he hears that you have salvaged the La Mancha, he'll leave. Take the ship-in-a-bottle he's been working on and head over to the Blue Casket. Talk into the microphone, which will bring Olivia out. Talk to Olivia, then go into the kitchen. Fill the ship-in-a-bottle from the keg.

Now walk to Toto's scrimshaw parlor. Open the cabinet and take the liquid nitrogen. Walk back to the Glottis and Meche. Give the bottle of alcohol to Glottis. We he returns from his drinking spree, talk to him. After he throws up, pour the liquid nitrogen on the warehouse floor. Walk over and disarm the trap.

Return to El Marrow

Dealing with Bowlsley

You must retire Bowlsley, LeMans' botanical weapons expert. Take the picture of the sprouted LSA agent from the garbage can (take his arm from the floor, while you're at it). Give the death threat from Hector LeMans' to the carrier pigeon, then show the pigeon the photo. Bowlsley will think the threat is for him and high-tail it to his hide out.

A Suitable Disguise

Before heading up into LeMans' penthouse, you'll need two things: a disguise and a gun. Go through the underground passageway and climb the ladder up into the backstage area. Take the pot of coffee and pour some for the two actors. Now climb up into the catwalks. Pour the coffee on the actors. Climb down and enter the dressing room, where you'll be given some Johnny Thunder revue makeup.

Now, you need a change of clothes. You can enter the casino now that your face is disguised. Walk down to the slot machines and talk to Meche, who is standing with Chowchilla Charlie. When she realizes it's you, she'll tell you she's trying to get Charlie's suit for you, but he won't leave until his machine pays off. Take the sheet and throw it over Charlie. While he's covered, talk to the LSA agent on the unicycle and tell him to work his magic on Charlie's machine. Once he's done, enter the men's room to put on the suit.

Manny, Get Your Gun

Next, you need a gun. For that, you must find Bowlsley. Luckily, he left a trail.

Climb back up into the catwalk and put the sprouted LSA agent's arm in the snow-machine grinder. Pick up the grinder (you must use the "pick up" key here), then take it down to the pool of Sproutella near the Bone Machine. Use the grinder on the Sproutella. Hmm…

Go into the caverns where Bowlsley escaped and walk to the mouth of the dark cave. Use the grinder here and follow the trail. Once inside, a large monster will attack. Move forward as far as possible, then use the remote control (which you took from Glottis earlier) to raise the Bone Machine. This will let you get up on the elevated walkway. Walk over to the ladder, so that the monster turns to face you. Use the remote to drop the Bone Machine on its tail.

Walk down the passageway to Bowlsley's hideout. Talking to him isn't going to do much good in the state he's in. Maybe if you could remind him of his florist days? Use your scythe to remove the tape over the bell on the door, then exit the shop and come back in. Talk to Bowlsley to get the gun and the Sproutella, then exit. Now you can confront LeMans.

The Final Confrontation(s)

LeMans' Penthouse

Before you get into the penthouse, you must get past the handyman. He'll ask you some personal questions about LeMans. Where is he coming up with these? And how will you ever find the answers?

Actually, it's quite easy. He's just making them up. Watch the Keno board behind Manny. Whenever the handyman asks a question, a new number is displayed. The most recent number is the answer.

In the penthouse, you'll run into Celso again. He's considering buying illegal tickets on the Number Nine from LeMans. You must convince him to do it. Perhaps if you told him of your travelling troubles, it will make the luxury route sound more worthwhile.

LeMans will take you back to your old office. After the confrontation there, climb out onto the roof. You must get to the other building, but LeMans broke the sign. You'll just have to break it further. Use the hand grinder on the crack at the base of the sign, then pour the Sproutella on it. This will give you access to the other roof and the case of Double-N tickets. But you still must deal with Hector LeMans.

Hector's Hideout

After the ambush at the train station, you'll find yourself outside LeMan's greenhouse hideout. Walk up and enter. After LeMans shoots you, pour the remaining liquid nitrogen on the bullet wound to stop yourself from sprouting.

Walk back down to the car and talk to Salvador's head. He'll tell you that there's a gun in the trunk, but the key is on his body somewhere behind the greenhouse. Olivia will interrupt, but Sal will make the ultimate sacrifice for the revolution.

Open the case of Number Nine tickets. One will flutter to Sal's head. A Number Nine ticket will always fly to its owner. Take Sal's ticket and walk up to the meadow behind the greenhouse. With the ticket in hand, walk around the meadow until it flies to Sal's body. Take the key and go open the trunk to get the gun. You can try to fire some rounds through the greenhouse windows, but neither you nor LeMans seems to be a very good shot, and neither of you will run out of ammo anytime soon. You must find another way to sprout him.

Walk down to the water tank and fire a few rounds into it. This will send Sproutella through the sprinkler system and straight onto LeMans, ending the corruption and paying off Manny's debt to the powers that be. Now he can make his way into the Ninth Underworld, with Mercedes Colomar in his arms.
